“Memento mori” – Remember you must die. The presence and constant reminder of death and mortality is a topic classic and yet contemporary art topic that has been visited and then re-visited by artists for hundreds of years. No other species has the capacity to contemplate and draw on our inevitable demise and the fascination is most certainly a lingering one, and it has served as inspiration throughout long periods in the history of art creation.
You can find excellent examples of the motif from early masters such as Rembrandt and Da vinci, and the tradition carries trough in works of the likes of Dali and Warhol, and it is still a favorite among contemporaries such as Damien Hirst and Banksy. It has been embraced and amplified by popular culture and distributed to the masses through various media.
